Fiona Maye är överrättsdomare med familjerätt som specialitet. Hon får ta sig an ett fall gällande en pojke på 17 år som behöver en blodtransfusion för att överleva. Familjen är Jehovas vittnen och av religiösa skäl säger både pojken och hans föräldrar nej till blodtransfusionen. Det blir Fionas uppgift att avgöra om man ska tvinga honom att ta emot blod. Hon besöker pojken på sjukhuset och blir väldigt berörd av besöket. Det är bråttom att fatta ett beslut innan det är för sent. Besöket resulterar i att pojken blir besatt av Fiona. Samtidigt genomgår Fiona en äktenskapskris och hennes man flyttar hemifrån. De har varit gifta länge och har inga barn. Boken tar upp ett moraliskt dilemma och väcker tankar om liv, död och kärlek. Jag tycker mycket om Domaren, precis som alla Ian McEwans böcker. Den har också blivit film med fantastiska Emma Thompson i huvudrollen.
