På den vulkaniska ön Jeju söder om Sydkorea finns det en lång tradition och kultur att kvinnor dyker i kollektiv (haenyeo) och försörjer familjen. Männen tar hand om barnen och hushållet.

Den här boken sträcker sig över perioden 1938 till 2008 och vi får följa två av dessa kvinnors livsöden. Det här är en bok om vänskap, svek och förlåtelse. Författaren Lisa See har gjort otroligt mycket research och det är även en bok som på ett väldigt intressant sätt berättar den blodiga historien om Sydkorea i allmänhet och Jeju i synnerhet.

Under många år talades det aldrig om de umbäranden och den tragedi som drabbade så många på ön Jeju, bland annat den fruktansvärda massakern i Bukchon. Men på senare år har Sydkorea börjat göra upp med sin historia och många barn och barnbarn vill berätta och på så vis få upprättelse för deras förfäders öden.
