A beautiful spirited young American woman, Isabel Archer inherits a large amount of money. She decides to enjoy her independence and travels to Europe where she is expected to marry. She does not hesitate to turn down two eligible suitors and subsequently becomes the victim of Machiavellian scheming by two American expatriates.
