Boken är en i en serie om familjen Ingalls pionjärliv och bygger på verkliga händelser som dottern Laura nedtecknat. I bokserien ser man hur de bygger upp en tillvaro, sakta men säkert, med ganska många bakslag om är dramatiskare i böckerna än i tv-serien.
Tv-serien har komprimerat många händelser och förlagt dem till staden där de lever i under en period. Manuset har spätts på med lite moraliska dilemman, men följer "synopsis" väl. Castingen blev en lyckträff förstod man när småsyrorna skulle se "pjärjen".
