Camino bor med sin moster i Dominikanska republiken, drömmer om att studera medicin i USA och längtar till somrarna då hennes pappa kommer till ön. Två månader yngre Yahaira bor i New York med sina föräldrar. Hennes pappa reser alltid bort på affärsresor hela somrarna. Efter en tragisk flygolycka där båda flickorna mister sin pappa uppdagar de sanningen om deras fars dubbelliv och hittar varandra. I sorgen efter att ha förlorat en pappa tvingas de hantera och omvärdera sina liv samtidigt som de lär känna en syster vars liv och förutsättningar sett helt annorlunda ut. Det handlar om nationalitet, identitet, familj och sorg/förlust. Boken baseras på en verklig flygkrasch 2001. Acevedo skriver otroligt bra. Handlingen i sig är intressant och språket gör boken ännu bättre. Jag skulle rekommendera att läsa boken och skippa ljudboken. Jag lyssnade och kändes efter ungefär en minut: ”åhnej!”. Det är bland annat författaren själv som läst in ljudboken, vilket jag brukar gilla men den här gången föll det mig inte i smaken. Hela boken är uppläst som om det vore ett uppträdande i poetry slam och det märks alltså att Acevedo har en bakgrund inom just poesin. Samtidigt kanske det passar vissa?
